Annotation Two

Objective #2: Learn about the types of Autism, and how to work with children with these kinds of disorders
Activities/Resources:
  • Observe the autistic children on the unit while assisting staff with caring for them
  • Review relevant research suggested by my mentor, as well as from my own findings
  • Discuss knowledge of autism with staff members and record responses in my notes
  • Report my findings to staff members during team meetings
Evidence:
  • Include a pamphlet detailing my findings on Autism
  • Include notes from my experience with autistic children

The following two documents present an informational brochure about Autism that I created, and a  paper I wrote including notes about the Autistic children I have worked with on the CPIS unit. Coming into this internship, I had no prior knowledge about Autism, other than that it develops young and it involves severely impaired social interactions; as I had learned in my Abnormal Psychology class. I really began to have an interest in this disorder when I was able to work with an Autistic child from the very beginning of my internship. Observing and working with him was fascinating to me, and really got me interested in doing some more research about the spectrum. After my experiences with Autism, I now am interested to further my knowledge of the disorder and am considering looking into research and other clinical work in the near future with other children with this disorder.

In order to learn more about Autism, I first observed the different children with this disorder on the unit. While I observed them, I intervened as best I could when he/she was upset about something to be able to develop a rapport. I checked in with the children often to see how their days had been going, and whether they had any concerns. In addition to observing and interacting with the children, I talked with and asked several questions of the many staff members on the unit. I was able to learn about the different types of Autism,  the current research going on about it, and overall just generally how to work with the children. And lastly, I researched quite a bit of information about Autism on my own to include in my brochure, with the proper citations included, to complete my search on information regarding this disorder for the time being. I have included these documents as evidence that I now know a great deal of information about Autism, and as proof that I have been working on this objective throughout my time at CPIS.
