Annotation Three

Objective #3: Learn how to guide and offer support to the children in a professional manner
Activities/Resources:
  • Encourage children to express feelings and worries verbally in a positive manner to staff; build therapeutic rapport
  • Offer coping skills (taking space, going to the quiet room, etc.)
  • Learn to proactively recognize inappropriate behavior in response to frustration and take the proper measures to keep the children safe (report to staff immediately)
Evidence:
  • Include confidential case studies of patients whom I have worked with individually: including advice and techniques I have used to help them cope with no identifying information

The following three documents present three case studies of three patients I have worked with individually on the CPIS unit. By designing these case studies, I have been able to learn a great deal about the children and the different kinds of coping skills I could use with them. Knowing each individual child's background through conducting these studies, I have been able to learn their triggers and which coping skills might work better with which children. These case studies have been more of a benefit to me rather than the unit because the staff members do not write case studies. Instead, I am recording this information to use as a reference in the future whether academically or professionally. This way, I can look back and see the work I have done with these children, and possibly be able to apply the same techniques to patients in the future.

In order to learn how to guide and offer support to the children in a professional manner, I observed my career mentor and other staff as they interacted with the children. I also talked with the staff and asked for advice on how to redirect the children, which behaviors required quiet room use, and how to recognize inappropriate behaviors. Once I had gained the proper knowledge about these issues, I was able to offer support to the children, and was able to build therapeutic rapport with many of them. I have included these case studies as evidence that I now know how to offer support and guidance to the children in a professional manner, and as proof that I have been working on this objective throughout my time at CPIS.
